Time up for Landfill?

North-east campaign leads the fight against waste

For years, limited recycling facilities in the north-east acted as a barrier to environmentally-conscious businesses taking practical steps to improve waste management in the area. This left many to feel that the only available option for disposing of difficult materials was through landfill.

Fast-forward to the present day and a unique environmental campaign is helping businesses and organisations of all sizes take their recycling and waste management to the next level by avoiding landfill altogether.

Believed to be the first campaign of its kind in the UK, Not-for-Landfill is a free-to-use business network that promotes ‘greener’ alternatives and supports the positive work being done by member organisations to achieve key environmental outcomes.Landfill

We launched the initiative in April 2016 and have since engaged with businesses and charities to raise awareness of how waste can be successfully diverted from landfill sites, as well as the social and economic benefits this approach brings to the wider community.

Throughout the campaign, we have helped create new opportunities for other organisations to come together, share knowledge and collaborate.

To date, the campaign has attracted signatures from more than 100 north-east businesses and organisations including the AECC, the Chester Hotel, EnerMech, Hydrasun and National Oilwell Varco (NOV).

In total, Not-for-Landfill members have actively diverted 1,539 tonnes of waste from landfill in the past year alone.

Another key focus of the campaign has been to promote local charities and social enterprises – including Aberdeen Cyrenians, Befriend A Child, Instant Neighbour and Wood Recyclability – that are actively seeking certain types of business waste and are often able to find new, innovative ways to reuse and repair materials.

This approach has seen Not-for-Landfill successfully bring together both large and small organisations to build a genuine community, share information and work in partnership to bring about lasting benefits.

Craig Donoghue is campaign manager for Not-for-Landfill and managing director at One Stop Waste Solutions.

Not-for-Landfill has been nominated for the Best Campaign honour at this year’s Northern Star Business Awards, organised by the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce. The winners will be announced at a black-tie ceremony at the AECC on Thursday, October 5.

Food Waste – the law is changing

Amendments to the duty of care requirements in Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act (1990), introduced under the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012, requires businesses to take all reasonable steps to separate dry recyclables and food waste for collection.

From 1st January 2016 the threshold for businesses to separate food waste will drop from 50kg to 5kg per week. Waste producers failing to separate material correctly are liable to fines of up to £10,000.

All our customers should already be compliant with the new legislation but if you have any questions or concerns please get in touch as soon as possible.

The good news is that recycling is the easiest way to reduce your waste costs. Ask us about a waste audit to identify potential cost savings across all your waste disposal.

Scotland Reaches Waste Milestone

The amount of rubbish sent to landfill in Scotland has fallen below 50% for the first time. Household waste of almost 2.5 million tonnes was generated in 2014 – a rise of 1.9% on the previous year. But the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) figures showed 49.3% of that rubbish was sent to landfill, down from 53.5% in 2013.

In 2007 almost two-thirds of Scotland’s household waste ended up in landfill, so this is a significant milestone. We also learned that the amount of food waste being recycled has doubled since 2011.

One Stop Waste Solutions is a “not-for-landfill company”, we provide our clients in the North East of Scotland with a Landfill diversion rate up to 95%, with the ultimate goal being 100% . We do this by providing a fully managed waste service including regular waste audits, training & reporting.

Hazardous Waste Paperchase

We found this great infographic which gives some insight into what our Special Waste Chemist, Mark Moynagh, does when we pick up your hazardous waste. Click on the picture below to see the full process.

Every time we collect your special waste we complete a consignment note which consists of five different coloured pages which accompany your waste along different stages of its journey.

It’s your responsibility to make sure that your hazardous waste has the correct paperwork. By working with us at One Stop Waste you know that this will be taken care of.

If you have any questions or concerns you can call us and we can talk you through the process.

Useful Zero Waste Guidance from SEPA

SEPA has recently produced two really useful guidance documents for businesses.

The first one is What is your duty of care?  Every organisation and business has a duty of care for the waste they generate. The information includes advice to businesses to store waste securely, transfer only to an authorised carrier and to complete (and keep) a waste transfer note. It also provides five easy steps to help you fulfil the new duty to segregate dry recyclables and food waste.

The second document is Guidance for businesses that require customer participation to segregate materials for recycling which aims to help businesses comply with their legal responsibility to segregate materials for recycling.

It includes useful advice for businesses that rely on their customers putting waste material in collection containers within their premises, such as caravan sites and shopping centres. It suggests the type of recycling facilities and information which should be available to their customers.
